Tomb of Prophets
Tomb of the Prophets is an ancient burial site located on the upper western slope of the Mount of Olives. The Mount of Olives in Jerusalem has been used as a Jewish cemetery for more than 3,000 years. Approximately 150,000 Jewish people are buried there including some of the greatest Jewish leaders, prophets, and rabbis of all time. Thus the Mount of Olives is by far the largest and most important Jewish cemetery in the world.
The catacombs are said to be the burial places of Haggai, Zechariah and Malachi, the last three Hebrew prophets who are believed to have lived during the 6th and 5th centuries BC.
Jews and Christians visit the tombs of these prophets of the last three books of the Old Testament.
We took a taxi from main road near Jaffa Gate and then went all the way to Mount of Olives. From Dome of Ascension, where Jesus ascended to heaven to Church of Pater Noster, where Jesus taught the Lord’s Prayer, we walked to vista point of Old Jerusalem. From there, through a narrow road, we walked to the Tomb of Prophets.
Biblical Scripture
Zechariah 14:4 (NIV)
On that day his feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, east of Jerusalem, and the Mount of Olives will be split in two from east to west, forming a great valley, with half of the mountain moving north and half moving south.
